Metastatic bone cancer - Strontium, Endoxan

Post a new topicby Panos on Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:01 am

My father has bone cancer, that started in the prostate. He is now 84 years old and was firstly diagnosed in July 2005. So far, he had brachythereapy together with cassodex, and the doctor was happy with his response over these two years. However, his PSA started to deteriorate last January and got worse around July. Now he has very bad pains in his hip and cannot walk without help. The doctor stopped the cassodex last month to see if that bad course could be reversed, but the tests showed a very high PSA again. The subsequent bone scan was not good and it revealed metastasis in the pelvis area. The doctor has put him now on Endoxan (in a pill form) and he has also undergone radiotherapy with strontium. He is also puting some sort of a patch in his arm.
I am very worried about him now and would like to have any opinions regarding prognosis, the therapy proposed or indeed any other therapy that one might consider in my father's case.

Many thanks in advance for your time

The treatment your father is undergoing seems very reasonable. There are different chemo therapies that can be given once prostate cancer outgrows hormonal control, these are usually given by an oncologist as opposed to a urologist.
