Turned 50 this year and wow

Post a new topicby Wowwhatnow on Tue Dec 23, 2008 9:52 am

Hi
I recently was diagnosed with a fairly agressive breast cancer size of a peanut - found the lump myself and went from there. Nothing showed on last year's mammo, but it sure did this year.
My "baseline" colonoscopy showed a golf-ball size carcinoid tumor. PT Scan didn't show any spread, and the carcinoid didn't even show up there.
First breast surgeon I consulted wants to do double mastectomy w/reconstruction, but won't allow any other surgery at same time.
Oncologist recommends lumpectomy & radiation and taking care of the carcinoid ASAP. OBGyn is advising a hysty as preventative due to the nature of the breast cancer Oncologist recommends a general surgeon who will take care of all, and postponing reconstruction, if indeed any is necessary.
I have a business to run and really need to be back in action by Feb 1. Don't use boobs in my line of work.

Sorry to hear that you are having all these problems. I can't relate to the breast cancer, but I can relate to the Carcinoid tumor. I had one in my small bowel which I had resected 3 years ago. there was lymph node involvement, but so far my tumor marker tests have come up normal.
I was diagnosed at 50 as well. I also have MS.

What ever you do, keep a positive attitude as it will help you promote healing and recovery.
Keep your chin up and keep smiling. Enjoy life and expect the best.

Hi Marinemom!

Did you start off with a carcinoid tumor in your colon? Did you have surgery before it spread into your liver and kidney. What were your symptoms?
Carcinoids are so rare and it is difficult to find anyone with one that you can relate to!
All the doctors appointments, tests and probing are definitely not fun!

Good Morning deedum55 , No it started in my appendix that was removed in april of 08 and was told everthimg was fine at that point. I was having alot of pain in my stomach and no appite, and no matter what i eat would have to go to the bathroom within the hour. I started loseing weight but my stomach was looking like I was 6 months with child !! but with all the CT scan's they were watching my Liver enlarge, with scan's almost every month for a year my Liver has enlarged to over twice its size and the spleen has as well. then they found the spot in the liver in Nov.08 and the spot in the right Kidney this last Dec. very upset over all this and wonder if they could have found things out long before now if they had done something in stead of waiting and watching everything enlarge..Please keep in touch.. lots of hugs Marinemom

Good afternoon Marinemom!

I can understand your fear and frustration as I had a similar thng happen to me. I had a cat scan done a year before they found my carcinoid doing a small bowel follow through. The radiologist said that everything was normal with my Ct scan. When the specialist looked at the same cat scan a year later, her radiologist saw the tumor in my ileum. How they missed the first time around, I don't now.
Anyhoo! maybe it wouldn't have went into my lymph nodes if they caught it by looking at the CT scan a little closer and not letting a whole year go by.
Stay strong and stay positive. One day at a time.

Big hugs and god bless you
